For two millennia it has been disciplined — carved into capitals, ordered into friezes, made to behave. \u003cem\u003eL'Acanthe Pétrifiée\u003c\/em\u003e is what happens when that discipline lapses. Here the foliage has broken its ranks and grown back over the form it was meant to decorate, tendrils lifting away from the body in long unresolved curves, and then the whole event has stopped. Not pruned. Not finished. Arrested, the way a building is arrested at the moment it becomes a ruin.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe vessel stands 81.29 cm — over thirty-two inches — and holds 16.5 kg of reinforced gypsum stone composite, cast solid enough that it settles into a surface rather than sitting on one. The surface is where the piece is made or lost. Each casting is finished by hand with a natural earth mineral wash, worked into the deep relief of the leaves and then drawn back off the raised edges, so the recesses hold shadow and the ridges catch light in the pale, chalky way that quarried stone does after a century outdoors. The grain is deliberately open. Under a raking light the plaster reads as geology, not as a coating. No two castings distress identically, and the studio does not correct toward a standard.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eGive it height and give it distance. This is an object for the long travertine console in an entry, the wide landing of a staircase, the end of a room that has nothing else competing in it — placement where a guest meets it at chest height before they meet anything else. It belongs to interiors already speaking in mineral and shadow: limewashed walls, unlacquered brass, a floor with some age in it. Leave it unlit from above and let a low warm source come in from one side; the relief needs a direction to work against. It holds nothing and needs nothing.
