Wherever it's set down, it asks to be left alone for a while — the way you'd let a bird finish settling before you moved past it.
The pair at the crown aren't decoration set on top of the piece — they're the reason the shell stays closed. Two birds, carved mid-settle, watching over something that hasn't happened yet.
La Couvée belongs to a small run within Decadent Heritage, the fifth in a line of objects that take the idea of the nest seriously rather than decoratively. It was hand-modeled before it was cast — the birds shaped first, the shell built up and closed around them after, so the pair reads as the reason for the form rather than something applied to its surface once the form already existed.
The bisque composite it's cast in is left to cure slowly, which is also why no two pieces from the same run are perfectly identical. A seam here, a slightly deeper fold there — these aren't flaws being tolerated, they're the record of a hand having been involved at every stage instead of only the first one.
It is not a reproduction of anything. There is no original La Couvée sitting in a collection somewhere that this is a copy of. What it borrows is a posture — the stillness of something under a bird that hasn't left the nest yet — and builds an object around that posture that has never existed before it.
