The white ribbed tree and the little house lit from inside on a dark wooden bookshelf at dusk
Site note 01

Lights on, side by side

The house and the tall tree, lit from inside. Site reports that the room has calmed down.

A whole street, and nobody on it.

One house, two trees, all white ceramic, all lit from inside. They spend the afternoon looking like a sensible shelf. Then the light goes, and somebody appears to have come home.

How the street works

  1. 1White ceramic. That is what you see by day.
  2. 2A light inside, so the whole thing glows once the room goes dark.
  3. Runs on 3 LR44 batteries, included.

By day there is nothing to explain. Once the room goes dark, the walls stop being walls and start behaving like a lampshade. That is the entire mechanism. We drew it anyway.

Site plans, all approved

Three pieces, no rules. Town planning has been done on less.

The long shelf

In a line, house in the middle. A mantel likes this. Leave some air between them, the way a street would.

Approved

The round table

House at the back, trees in front. A small square. It works from every chair.

window Approved

The windowsill

Trees close together, house walking away. By day it gets the window. After dark, the window gets it.

As built

The drawings say what ought to happen. These are the photographs from site.

The white house close up, lit from inside, light showing through its windows and a few small holes in the roof
Site note 02

Detail, the house

Lit, close up. A few points of light get out through the roof. The neighbours have been told.

The two white trees lit from inside on a painted windowsill, houses lit across the street
Site note 03

Detail, both trees

One in ribs, one in rounded bumps. Every bump takes the light separately. Nobody asked it to.

  1. 1

    Site

A mantel, a shelf, a windowsill. Somewhere you pass in the evening, at about the height of your eyes or a little under.

  2. 2

    Setback

Keep it back from the edge. Floors win.

  3. 3

    Neighbours

Not beside your brightest lamp. It will lose that argument. A darker corner does more for it than a spotlight would.

  4. 4

    Hours of work

It does very little at noon, and that is in the plans. Evenings are when it earns the shelf.

  5. 5

    Handover

Wrap each piece in paper, separately. Give it before dark and explain nothing. A recent move is a good excuse. So is any evening that arrives at four.
