A gold oval with a mirror for a floor, the sort of thing your aunt kept by the bed in 1974. Everything set on it instantly looks deliberate, including the keys.

The feature
Corners had a good run.
For a while everything in the house was square. Square trays, square tiles, square opinions about clutter. Then someone set a bottle down on an oval and the whole dresser stopped looking like a filing system.
An oval has no front row. Nothing on it stands in a line, so nothing on it is out of line. Give it a mirror for a floor and a gold rim to keep the edge honest, and the things you use every day begin to look collected.
Your things were never the problem. They just had nowhere to stand.
The quiz
What goes on your oval?
Three questions. Be honest. Nobody is watching.
Question 1 of 3
It is 7 a.m. You are looking for…
Question 2 of 3
The ideal evening ends…
Question 3 of 3
A guest glances at your things and sees…

The answers
No peeking.
Everyone peeks. That is why we print them here.
Mostly As
The Vanity
That’s you.
Perfume, more perfume, one good flower in a small glass vase. You already own the look. It just needed a floor.
Mostly Bs
The Morning Tray
That’s you.
One cup, carried back to bed by the handles, in both hands. Nothing else is required of you before nine.
Mostly Cs
The Coffee Table
That’s you.
Two books, a candle, a cup, a sprig in a small vase. It will not make you tidier, but it will make it look on purpose.
Mostly Ds
The Pearl Dish
That’s you.
Pearls at the end of the night, scent beside them, linen optional. Nothing on it is useful. All of it is correct.
Close-up
Look at the handles.
The other end. Same handle, same rosette.
The beading. A line of small beads runs round the mirror. Not strictly needed. Your eye goes there first anyway.
The rosette. A little moulded rosette sits at the foot of the handle, with scrolls going off in every direction.
The handle. Open, one at each end, so it lifts like a tray and not like a plate.
The gold sits pale on the flat of the rim and deepens in the grooves, which is why the detail still reads from across a room.
The letters page
Dear Oval
Dear Oval, what are you actually made of?
Curious, Ohio
Resin in gold, with a mirror. Simple as that.
Dear Oval, are you heavy?
Moving House, Maine
450 to 540 g, about a pound. You will not need a second person.
Dear Oval, why gold?
Undecided, Oregon
A mirror is cool and a dresser is warm, and gold gets on with both of them. It is resin in gold, I should add. I am a tray, not an heirloom.
Dear Oval, will you make me look good?
Hopeful, Texas
I will make your perfume look good. I am a tray. Please manage your expectations.

Hint, hint.
For anyone hoping to be given one. Leave it on the dresser.
Dear ,
I would like The Vanity Oval. It is $39.
It would go on the dressing table.
It would go by the bed.
I have been very good.
